Arts funding arrangements are under closer scrutiny than ever, while our media reports that “Australia’s arts institutions are tearing themselves apart” amidst sackings, resignations, boycotts and sponsorship withdrawals. So how can we prepare for inevitable misalignments in values among our key stakeholders – our partners, artists and collaborators, audiences, - and staff? What are the tools our arts fundraisers and partnership managers require to navigate increasing reputational risk? And what are the frameworks and processes that can guide our organisations and their leaders to make, communicate and review decisions with rigour and respect.

Charting the next course: harnessing benchmarking research for audience and donor insight In a project spanning 8 years, 50 organisations and nearly 1 million contributions from across Australia and New Zealand, Tessitura has defied a picture of cultural giving across our region. Join Amalia Hordern, Tessitura’s Senior Director in Asia Pacific, to pinpoint the trends arts and cultural organisations should be monitoring and how donor behaviours have shifted over these eventful years. Amalia will couple these learnings with insights from our companion research into audience and ticket buyer behaviour, illustrating the interplay between earned and contributed revenue - unlocking what’s changed, what’s consistent and what’s surprising about today’s arts and culture supporters.

Knowing your Members and why it matters
Christiane Pracht (Auckland War Memorial Museum - Membership Manager 🇳🇿) and chaired by Michelle Tabet (Left Bank Co - Founder & Director 🇫🇷)
-
Before launching Museum Membership in December 2000, we commissioned market research and tested our value proposition, likelihood to join and optimum price point. This gave us a good understanding of our potential customer base and provided a valuable tool when navigating discussions with internal stakeholders. We continue to survey our Museum Members annually to gain insights into what we are doing well and to learn where there’s room for improvement. The survey results help guide conversations, improve our product and in doing so enable us to grow revenue. However, while evidence-based decision making is important sometimes you must go out on a limb and test your assumptions in real life. I would like to share my experience in doing just that – the good, the bad and the surprising!
