30 UNDER 30 2021, UNSW University
An initiative for 30 emerging professionals
In 2020, to celebrate our 20th anniversary of Communicating the Arts (CTA), we launched this unique initiative to help the upcoming generation of young professionals to stand at the forefront of the cultural scene and thrive. The 30 under 30 initiative dedicated to 30 emerging professionals under 30 from all over the world. As part of our commitment to find answers to big questions of our times, we invited young talent to investigate the larger issues about climate change while gaining new skills and developing their network in the arts sector.
“I always find interaction with young professionals in the industry refreshing and motivating so thank you for this great opportunity.”
Emma Cantwell - Former Director of Marketing and Communication, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Jury member of 30 under 30

Laurin Ivetić - Winner of the program
"By giving young professionals and students the chance to present contemporary issues that are important to them, the 30 under 30 initiative has its heart at the right spot. Together with an international and diverse cohort, 30 under 30 enabled me to dive deeper into a topic that was already important to me personally. Thanks to the initiative, we had the opportunity to present the research in front of an international audience and put sustainability on the agenda of the biggest cultural institutions. And as a plus, being able to network with other conference participants is invaluable for young professionals like us."

Our inaugural round of 30 under 30 looked at climate change. In 2020 our 30 research fellows searched for the most innovative ideas and action plans drawn up by cultural institutions to reduce the impact of climate change.
Research fellows worked in pairs to identify 15 creative projects that aim to tackle global warming and climate change. They then presented the best of them at an online masterclass and at Communicating the Arts conference in Lausanne in September 2021. The three winning projects selected by the jury members were :
ASSOCIATION AIRE, PROJECT ECOMURALES - Peru
Presented by Nabra Nelson (USA) & Tristana Perroncel (Peru)
This program commenced in 2014 to tackle the issues of over-pollution and overpopulation in the city of Lima, Peru. Ecomurales uses a Knoxout system using procalyptic paint, that transforms carbon to oxygen, and organic matter from sunlight. Their main objective was to purify air. Their challenge was to raise awareness among the community about pollution, increase ecological morals, to beautify the city, and to showcase the importance and responsible behaviour towards the environment.
Result – By the end of 2018, they had painted over 8000m of walls around Peru, which is equal to 8000 trees being planted. The success of this project led to other countries, like Ecuador and Colombia, implementing these painting systems.
BOTSWANA NATIONAL MUSEUM, PROJECT ZEBRA ON THE MOVE - Botswana
Presented by Mathilde Vallée (France) & Marzia Azzariti (Italy)
Museums are the advocates to the community. This project aims to promote the indigenous environmental friendly preserving methods. Their objective is the preservation of the biodiversity, which is alternative to the use of toxic pesticides.
They use indigenous herbs, wood, ash, cow dunk to control pests infestation on crips and food. Their main aim through this project are the young children, they have educational tours on this museum showcasing these different preservative method and how these little changes can impact to save the planet.
Result – This project focuses mainly on educating the young children on these ancient preservative methods. Educational tours are held annually and monthly around these museums.
CAPE FAREWELL, PROJECT POLLUTION PODS - United Kingdom
Presented by Laurin Ivetić (The Netherlands) & Federico Zonno (Italy)
This final winning project started in 2018 to find a solution for the toxic gases in the environment that are both visible and non visible. They all have a direct impact on us and earth.
This project has installed pods to demonstrate real life experience that shows harmful impact of pollution. Five geodesic domes are connected by polygonal passageways to form a ring in UK. Within each dome, the air quality of five global cities (London, Beijing, New Delhi, Sao Paulo, and Tautra) is recreated.
Result – Over 10,000 people have visited these pods since its beginning, and have gained real life experience of the air in the five countries.
