An interview with Memorist

Digital twin : Interview with Martin AJDARI, Deputy Director of the Opera National de Paris

Q: What was the initial plan for creating a Digital Twin for the Opera National de Paris?

AGP (Art Graphique et Patrimoine): The primary goal was technical: to aid in the preservation and restoration of the Palais Garnier. A digital twin is a high-resolution virtual representation of the venue, allowing for monitoring and decision-making without physical intervention.

Q: How did the collaboration between the Opera and AGP begin?

ONP (Opera National de Paris): The partnership with AGP on the Palais Garnier’s digitization has been in place for years, aiding in restoration surveys. AGP's work enabled us to digitize complex architectural elements like the roof and the Pythie basin accurately.

Q: What are the different purposes of the Digital Twin?

MEMORIST: The Digital Twin can be utilized for creating digital sets in the film and advertising industries, known as the Heritage Virtual Scene. This promotes preservation and provides remote access to the virtual set, reducing costs and carbon footprint while generating income for the Opera.

Q: As an official partner of HVS, why join the competition at Vivatech?

ONP: Being a 150-year-old institution, we're at the vanguard of creativity, including digital advancements. AGP's Digital Twin offers commercial, preservation, and social engagement opportunities.

Additional Insights on the Need for a Digital Twin at Palais Garnier:

  1. Dense Programming: With over 400 performances and only 5% of 200 monthly requests for filming or events fulfilled due to scheduling, the Heritage Virtual Scene opens doors for more productions.

  2. Historical Preservation: As we approach our 150th anniversary, filming in the listed building is challenging. The HVS offers a safer and more flexible option for production teams.

  3. Commitment to Creation and Innovation: The Opera’s DNA is about showcasing ambitious operas, choreography, and classical ballets. The partnership with AGP embodies shared values of excellence and innovation, aiming to reach new audiences.

Q: HVS received the Awards for innovation at Vivatech 2023. Why is it considered innovative?

MEMORIST: HVS offers a new creative and technological avenue for filmmakers, with benefits like customization, distribution choices, and reductions in cost, time, and logistical challenges. This innovation earned us this year’s award.
