Base Design launches its new collaborative tool: Culture Index!

Learn the insights from Mirek Nisenbaum, Partner and Digital Director at Base Design.

What is this project about?

The Culture Index is a dynamic, community-driven platform created to connect and empower cultural institutions globally by bringing their online presence together in one place. More than a static resource, it’s a living initiative that evolves through active participation. Designed to showcase the technologies institutions use and highlight best practices, the platform creates a space for collective learning and growth. With hundreds of institutions already featured and an ambitious goal to include every museum worldwide, the Index will continue to evolve, shaped by the contributions and feedback of its users.

Who initiated it?

The project was initiated by the Base Digital leadership team—Mirek Nisenbaum, Thomas Byttebier, and Andrey Starkov—drawing from Base Design’s passion for cultural institutions and our years of experience enhancing their online presence. We realized that the data we accumulated over the years could spark inspiration and drive innovation across the sector, leading us to create this unique platform to share those insights. While the concept originated within Base, the platform’s future development will be community-driven. As cultural institutions engage with the Index, share feedback, and offer insights, the platform will grow, transforming into an even richer resource that reflects the needs and aspirations of its users.

Who is it for?

The Culture Index is an indispensable tool for anyone managing the digital presence of cultural institutions, especially those in marketing and communications. It’s also a valuable resource for anyone with a passion for the cultural sector, offering insights and inspiration that can inform and elevate digital strategies.

What is the purpose of this project?

Our mission is to provide a valuable resource for cultural institutions as they face increasing pressure to evolve in a rapidly changing digital landscape. Base cares deeply about culture and is committed to helping institutions adapt by improving their digital presence and fostering stronger connections within the community. By actively seeking input and collaboration, The Culture Index is designed to continuously evolve, offering insights and support for institutions navigating the digital transformation shaping the future of the cultural sector.

What are the benefits?

The Culture Index provides a comprehensive collection of technologies and best practices, allowing users to explore by geography, technology, and institution type. Designed to inspire and inform, it offers a valuable resource for discovering current solutions and trends. As a community-based platform, it also encourages contributions from cultural institutions, which will help shape the Index's future. Continuously evolving with its users, the platform may also introduce editorial content and expert advice, offering even more tools to guide and inspire decision-making.

Was it important for you to keep it free?

Absolutely. Keeping The Index free and open is at the heart of our mission. As we expand to include even more cultural institutions, we believe that accessibility is key to fostering a stronger, more connected online cultural community. The open and free nature of the platform encourages a wider range of institutions to participate, ensuring that the platform reflects the diversity and richness of the global cultural sector. How do you collect the data and how many museums are part of this index? We gather data through a combination of automation tools, API connections, and manual curation by our dedicated editors. Contributions from the cultural community further enrich the data. Currently, The Culture Index features over 700 institutions, and with the support of its users, it has the potential to grow to several thousands. As more institutions contribute and engage with the platform, the Index will continue to expand, offering an even more comprehensive resource for the cultural sector.
