Forged in Response: How the American Civil War Shaped Canada
This presentation by Tim Foran, curator of the exhibition, and Claire Champ, Creative Developer, explores how the American Civil War (1861–1865) helped shape Canada’s early development. Drawing on the Canadian Museum of History’s exhibition, it shows how the conflict influenced Canada’s path toward unity and stronger political and military institutions.
The presenters will highlight how the war contributed to the growth of Canada’s armed forces and parliamentary system, and how Black Freedom Seekers escaping enslavement in the United States found safety in Canada while continuing their fight for equality. The presentation also touches on treaty relationships with Plains First Nations and how border dynamics have shaped identities and governance.
Through this lens, the session shares approaches to presenting complex, cross-border histories in clear, engaging, and inclusive ways, connecting past events to Canada’s identity today.
This talk shows how museums can share connected histories, build understanding across borders, and engage audiences with meaningful stories.
Today, Canada stands as a proud and independent power, defined by diverse identities, a federal parliamentary system, and strong institutions. But did you know many of these foundations were forged in response to a war we weren’t officially part of?
The exhibition “Close to Conflict” invites you to explore how the American Civil War set Canadian society, politics and military on a transformative path, and why its legacies still matter today.
Explore contemporary perspectives on how Canada evolved from a group of separate and vulnerable British colonies into a unified, active, and integral member of the British Empire, and then eventually an independent power on the world stage. Learn about how the Civil War catalyzed the development of our armed forces and shaped our political system. Discover how Black Freedom Seekers escaping enslavement found legal freedom here and began a fight for social equality that continues to this day. Delve into the history of treaty relationships with Plains First Nations and how the border—then and now—continues to shape lives and identities.
Presenters will explore how museums navigate contested pasts, foster inclusive narratives, and engage audiences with shared histories of conflict, migration, and nation-building – a relevant and timely project.
